The gigawatt, unit of power

The gigawatt is a thousand million watts, that is a thousand megawatts. It is the unit in which power stations, national grids and interconnectors are counted, and it is far too large for anything a household owns.

It is the scale at which a country plans. The Three Gorges dam reached its full 22.5 gigawatts in 2012, when the last of its thirty-two main generators came online, making it the largest power station ever built. A modern nuclear reactor sits near 1.6 gigawatts, and the largest offshore wind turbines around 0.015, so a single gigawatt is about sixty-seven of them turning at once.
