How do you convert MB to GB?

Divide the number of megabytes by 1,000, per the SI convention used by drive manufacturers and mobile plans. Windows counts in base 1,024 (gibibytes, GiB) instead, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows up as 931 "GB": both systems coexist.

Why does my 1 TB drive show only 931 GB in Windows?

The manufacturer counts in base 10 (1 TB = 1,000 billion bytes) while Windows displays base-1,024 units (1 shown "GB" = 1 GiB = 1.074 billion bytes). 10¹² ÷ 2³⁰ ≈ 931: no space is missing, only the display unit differs.

Are MB and Mb the same?

No: MB (megabyte) is 8 times larger than Mb (megabit). Internet speeds are sold in megabits per second, so an 800 Mb/s fiber line downloads about 100 MB per second.

How many photos fit in 1 GB?

Roughly 200 smartphone photos at 5 MB each, or 60 to 80 camera RAW files. One hour of HD streaming uses about 3 GB.

Does a 16 GB memory stick really hold 16 billion bytes?

No, it holds 17,179,869,184, because RAM is the one component that stayed binary: its address lines can only produce powers of two. A RAM GB is therefore a gibibyte, 7.4 % more than a disk gigabyte. The same symbol covers two different quantities depending on the part.

Why does the same drive read 1 TB on a Mac and 931 GB on Windows?

Because Apple moved to decimal units with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, released on 28 August 2009: the Finder divides by 10⁹ and lands back on the manufacturer's figure. Windows kept dividing by 2³⁰ while still writing GB. Same drive, both readings correct, only the definition of the gigabyte differs.
