Divide the number of gigabytes by 1,000. Terabytes start being readable past 1,000 GB: a 3,400 GB backup reads far more easily as 3.4 TB.

When should I start talking in terabytes?
Past 1,000 GB the usage shifts naturally. Below that, the gigabyte stays clearer: nobody advertises a 0.256 TB phone when 256 GB reads at a glance.
Is a 2 TB cloud plan a lot?
It is 2,000 GB, room for roughly 400,000 smartphone photos or 500 films in 1080p. For a family photo library that is comfortable; for regular 4K editing it fills up within a year or two.
Why does my 4 TB drive show only 3.64 TB?
Because the system divides by 2⁴⁰ instead of 10¹² while keeping the TB label. Those are really tebibytes. The gap is constant, around 9 %, and grows with the advertised capacity.
How long does it take to fill a terabyte?
Divide the volume by the real throughput: one million megabytes at 110 MB/s, what a saturated Gigabit Ethernet link reaches, takes two and a half hours. The same terabyte needs 11 hours over a USB 2.0 external drive at 25 MB/s, and 22 hours on a fibre line whose upload caps at 100 Mb/s. An online backup is measured in hours, not in clicks.
