How do you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius temperature by 1.8, then add 32. Celsius sets its zero at water's freezing point, Fahrenheit doesn't: a plain multiplication isn't enough, you need that 32-degree offset.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't the Celsius-to-Fahrenheit formula a simple multiplication?

Because the two scales don't start at the same point: 0 °C is 32 °F, not 0 °F. That requires a linear formula with an offset (multiply, then add), unlike length or weight conversions which use a plain factor.

What oven temperature in Fahrenheit matches a UK/EU recipe?

Home ovens are usually set between 325 °F and 450 °F, roughly 160 °C to 230 °C. 180 °C (a medium oven) corresponds to 356 °F.

What is 37 °C in Fahrenheit?

37 °C (average body temperature) equals 98.6 °F - the reference value commonly used in the US for normal human body temperature.

Why does the Fahrenheit scale start so low?

Because Fahrenheit put his zero at the temperature of a mixture of ice, water and ammonium chloride, the coldest he could reproduce in 1724, and his 96 at human body temperature. The water points, 32 and 212, therefore land on inelegant values: they are consequences, not choices.

What is absolute zero?

The temperature at which thermal motion reaches its minimum, that is -273.15 °C or -459.67 °F. Nothing can go below it. The kelvin starts there and rises at the same rate as the Celsius degree, which is why we write 300 K without the word degree: the kelvin is not one.
