How to convert bytes to bits
Multiply the value in B by 8: the result is in bit.
Where these two units are used
The byte is eight bits today, but that was not always true: early machines had six, seven or nine, which is why the unambiguous name in several languages is octet. The bit is the smallest possible quantity of information, one yes-or-no answer; its name contracts binary digit, coined in 1947 and made famous by Shannon's paper the following year. Eight to one, and it is the factor that disappoints subscribers: the line is sold in bits per second, the file counted in bytes, so a hundred-megabit link never pulls more than 12.5 megabytes per second.
