Frequently asked questions
Why is a pressure cooker rated at 15 psi?
Because that is the pressure it holds above the surrounding air: 15 psi is 1.03 bar, and water boils there at 121 °C instead of 100. It is the reference figure for sterilising autoclaves, whose standard cycle runs twenty minutes at that temperature. European models tend to quote 1 bar instead, that is 14.5 psi, which leaves under a degree of difference in the pot.
Is the bar an SI unit?
No, and neither is the psi. The bar is accepted for use with the SI without belonging to it: it is exactly 100 kilopascals, which makes the conversion readable at a glance. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures does not recommend it, yet industry and meteorology stick to it because the pascal is too small for daily life: a tyre pressure would read 240,000.
Why do air tools ask for 90 psi?
Because that is the supply pressure they are designed around: 90 psi is 6.2 bar, and a European household compressor delivers exactly 6 to 8 bar. Pressure alone is not enough though, flow decides, counted in cfm in the United States and in litres per minute elsewhere. An impact wrench wants roughly 4 cfm continuous, that is 113 litres per minute, and a compressor that holds the pressure without holding the flow runs out of breath in seconds.
When does the tyre pressure warning light come on?
In the United States, at 25 % below the placard figure, a threshold set by federal standard FMVSS 138. A car whose placard reads 35 psi, that is 2.41 bar, only lights its warning at 26 psi, meaning 1.81 bar. The tyre is already well under-inflated by then: the light reports a fault, it does not replace a monthly check with a gauge.
Is a football pumped to the same pressure as an American football?
No, and the two sports do not even count in the same unit. The NFL requires between 12.5 and 13.5 psi, that is 0.86 to 0.93 bar. FIFA writes its rules in atmospheres: 0.6 to 1.1 atmosphere at sea level, meaning 8.8 to 16.2 psi or 0.61 to 1.11 bar. The football range is therefore seven times wider than the American football one.
