Frequently asked questions

Why does the tyre sidewall say 51 psi?

Because that is the maximum the casing will take, not the pressure you should run. The sidewall carries a line such as MAX. PRESS. 350 kPa (51 PSI), which is 3.5 bar, while the placard in the driver's door jamb gives the carmaker's figure, often 2.2 or 2.4 bar, that is 32 to 35 psi. Inflating to the sidewall number stiffens the ride, wears the centre of the tread and lengthens wet braking distance.

14.5038 or 14.696, which number do I want?

Both are correct and they answer different questions. 14.5038 is the conversion factor: one bar is 14.5038 psi, always. 14.696 is standard atmosphere expressed in psi, since 101,325 pascals are 1.01325 bar. The second turns a gauge reading into an absolute pressure; it never converts bar.

What does a gauge marked in kg mean?

Kilogram-force per square centimetre, written kgf/cm² and shortened to kg on older compressors and on Japanese equipment. It is 98,066.5 pascals, so 0.980665 bar and 14.22 psi. The gap to the bar stays under 2 %, which is why the confusion does no harm on a tyre, but a hydraulic circuit rated 250 kgf/cm² holds 245 bar, not 250.

How hard should a bicycle tyre be?

Between 6 and 8 bar on a narrow road tyre, that is 87 to 116 psi, and between 1.6 and 2.2 bar on a mountain bike, that is 23 to 32 psi: a factor of four inside the same sport. The sidewall always gives a range, and floor pumps carry both scales because European tyres are marked in bar and American ones in psi.

Is a diving cylinder 200 bar or 3,000 psi?

Both, depending on the country, and they are not the same cylinders. A European steel cylinder is filled to 200 bar, which is 2,901 psi, or to 232 bar for the high-pressure models, 3,365 psi. The American 80 cubic foot aluminium cylinder is filled to 3,000 psi, that is 206.8 bar. A round number on one side is never round on the other.
