How do you convert kW to hp?
Multiply the number of kilowatts by 1.341. This is the conversion to run when comparing a European registration document, which states power in kW, with an American spec sheet quoted in horsepower.
kW = hp ÷ 1.341

The kilowatt is the legal unit of power in the European Union, derived from the SI watt. Mechanical horsepower, at 745.6998716 W, remains the commercial reference in the United States and the United Kingdom, where it coexists with the metric horsepower of 735.49875 W. Methodology & sources.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find power in kW on a registration document?
In field P.2 of the European registration certificate. Field P.6 just below it carries the administrative or tax rating, which is not a physical unit but a taxation band specific to each country. Mixing the two makes a car look far weaker than it is.
Is 1 kW 1.34 or 1.36 horsepower?
Both, depending on which horsepower. 1.341 for the mechanical horsepower, 1.360 for the metric one. On a 110 kW car the gap is two horsepower, enough to make spec sheets from different continents incomparable.
How much power does an electric car have?
From 50 kW for a city car to over 300 kW for a sports saloon, that is 67 to 400 hp. Electric models make the conversion less necessary: manufacturers now often quote kilowatts directly, including in English-speaking markets.
And a household appliance?
An oven runs around 2 to 3 kW, an induction hob 7 kW at full load, a domestic heat pump 5 to 12 kW. Expressed in horsepower those figures read absurd, a reminder that the horse has no real use left outside engines.
Why does an electric car quote two power figures?
Because an electric motor cannot hold its peak for long. The maximum power, the one in the press release, lasts a few tens of seconds before the battery or the cooling system reins it in. Field P.2 of the European registration document carries the 30-minute continuous rating defined by UNECE regulation R85, which is often far lower: a car sold as 150 kW may be registered at 70 kW.
