The cent, Indian unit of area
The cent is one hundredth of an acre: 435.6 square feet, 40.4686 square meters. It is the unit in which building plots are advertised and sold in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
It is the only Indian land unit built on ten. Its neighbours cut by twenty for the katha, by forty for the guntha, by eight for the kanal, and none of them lets a plot price be read off a price per acre; the cent does, since a hundred of them make the acre and the decimal point does the rest. The trap is in the rounding everyone applies: a cent is 40.4686 square meters and not 40, and on a ten-cent plot the shorthand quietly loses 4.7 square meters.
