Frequently asked questions
Why 9.80665 and not the local gravity?
Because the kilogram-force is defined on a conventional value, not on a measurement. Real gravity runs from 9.78 m/s² at the equator to 9.83 at the poles, and further still with altitude. If the kgf followed the place, a spring calibrated in Paris would lie in Quito. The General Conference on Weights and Measures therefore fixed 9.80665 in 1901, and the conversion to newtons is exact everywhere.
kgf, kp, kilopond: the same unit?
Yes, three names for one thing. Kilopond, written kp, is the German name, still legible on workshop equipment and older springs. Kilogram-weight also turns up. All of them are 9.80665 newtons, and a manual mixing kp and kgf is mixing nothing at all.
A shelf rated for 500 kg, what force is that?
4.9 kilonewtons, that is 500 kgf. Load ratings for furniture, wall plugs and shelving are given in kilograms out of habit, although they are forces. A plug rated 50 kg holds 490 newtons in static tension, and the figure assumes a load set down gently: a knock easily doubles the real effort.
Why did the standards drop the kilogram-force?
Because one word there names two quantities. Writing that a part weighs 12 kg and that it takes 12 kg leaves the reader to guess whether a mass or a force is meant, and the mistake does not show in the result. The newton removes the ambiguity by its name alone. The kilogram-force is still tolerated in practice but no longer belongs to the SI.
What becomes of a kilogram-force on the Moon?
Nothing. It is a unit of force worth 9.80665 newtons by definition, on the Moon as on Earth. What changes is the weight of a kilogram of matter: 1 kgf on Earth, about 0.17 kgf on the Moon. Confusing the two is like believing a metre would shorten up a mountain.
